Energy efficiency is key to reach climate neutrality


8th and 9th May we arranged the Annual Consortium meeting, gathering approximately 100 participants from the partners in FME HighEFF. The agenda for the two days included presentations concerning strategic perspectives nationally as well as internationally and industrial projects on energy efficiency in addition to the usual highlights from the research in FME HighEFF.

The opening session with keynote presentations from Professor Gabriella Tranell (NTNU) and EVP Sustainability Nils A. Røkke (SINTEF) showed clearly that the topics covered by FME HighEFF is central for value creation in national process industry as well as crucial for addressing global climate issues.

"Energy efficiency is key to reach climate neutrality" it was stated by Nils A. Røkke and that clearly describes the importance of FME HighEFF and further that the high expectations to what can be achieved through such a large R&D effort is very high!

Industrial presentations from Mayekawa, Glencore and Rema1000/Norsk Kylling showed how R&D is taken further towards industrial projects that have a major impact on reducing specific energy use and by that reducing costs of operation for industry, obviously with a positive "side effect" of reduced CO2 emissions.

Among the research results from FME HighEFF the work on thermal energy storage, natural refrigerants, simulation of compressor valves, heating of carbon anodes attracted good interest and discussions in plenum and bilaterally – just to mention a few.

The PhD/PostDoc students were also present, having a short pitching session to kick off day two of the meeting as well as presenting their work through posters during breaks – this certainly attracted a lot of interest from all participants.

In the end, two fruitful days with lots of discussions and talks among FME HighEFF partners, taking us a good step closer to achieving our vision " Joint effort for creating a competitive, energy efficient and environmental friendly industry for the future".

Industrial energy consumption is massive, but thermal storage can boost energy efficiency

In 2017, energy consumption in Norway’s onshore industrial sector was 79 TWh. In comparison, total household energy consumption in the same year was 49 TWh. Energy demand in the industry is often in the form of thermal energy – steam, heat or hot water, and cooling. Read more ....
Thermal energy storage has a key role to play in enabling the greater use of renewable energy in the industrial sector, and will boost the utilisation of industrial waste heat.
