The year 2023 has been full of excitement in the world of offshore wind. In February, the Norwegian Energy Commission's report argued for the development of offshore wind along the entire coast of Norway, sending a strong signal that wind power is part of the solution. It also called for the quick approval of Equinor and its partners' plans for Trollvind, a 1 GW floating wind farm that ended up being shelved.

In April, the Ostend Declaration united nine countries in stating a common goal of making the North Sea the world's biggest power plant by installing 300 GW of offshore wind by 2025. This corresponds to a total investment of around 1000 billion EUR. The next month, NorthWind partner Nexans was awarded a monumental contract to carry out three high voltage direct current projects for offshore wind farms. At just under NOK 20 billion, the contract exemplifies the massive scale of the effort which will be required to integrate offshore wind.

Next year promises even more thrills, as development plans start being put into motion. Meanwhile, FME NorthWind is progressing according to plan. 2023 saw an uptick in the Centre's output of peer-reviewed publications, and we expect this trend to continue moving forward.
